We want to foster the entrepreneurial spirit and looking for the most disrupting robotics startups in robotics, automation and related technologies. It aims to foster the spirit of creation of robotics spin-offs, spin-outs and start-ups, and to provide a platform to exchange ideas, experience and business opportunities.

RoboCity16 is organizing this event with major companies, experts and investors in these fields as advisors. The event is intended to inspire, enable and empower students, researchers and young professionals who have the “entrepreneurship bug” in starting a robotic technology based firm.

GLOBAL ROBOT EXPO arises from the need of a booming industry in clear expansion. Its aim is to provide a space where all stakeholders can showcase their technological achievements from both the private and the public sectors.

In this forum Carlos Balaguer presents the recent advances and future challenges in humanoid robots.

Our colleague Miguel González-Fierro has been granted with the Oustanding Thesis Award from the UC3M. He presented his PhD Thesis defense on October 2014. Its title is Humanoid Robot Control of Complex Postural Tasks based on Learning from Demonstration. The directors of the thesis were Thrishantha Nanayakkara (King’s College London) and Carlos Balaguer.

In the last workshop of RoboCity2030 (EU Projects Results in the Frame of the Madrid’s Regional Robotic Hub RoboCity2030) held on December 11th there was a presentation by Fernando Martín Galende (CDTI, EU Programmes Division – Spanish ICT National Contact Point – Horizon 2020). Funding opportunities for European robotics projects in Horizon 2020 were presented and the open call ICT-26-2016 was introduced.

ROBO-SPECT (http://www.robo-spect.eu/) is a project co-funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme that runs from 2013 through 2016 implemented by 11 partner organisations from 6 European countries. The ROBO-SPECT consortium is combining recent advances in robotic systems and sensors, computer vision, ultrasonic sensing, and laser scanning, in an integrated manner to achieve structural assessment of reinforced concrete linings in transportation tunnels in a semi-autonomous way.

RoboCity2030 promotes robotics science and technologies in numerous human-centred applications in metropolitan areas, as well as in country sites. The strong synergies created by the main partners and more than 20 associated partners, from industry, allow the development of dozens of innovative projects and knowledge transfer programs. Several results from these R&D activities have generated added-value products, technologies, software and services.

Last October, 29th STAMAS 7FP project organized a workshop in the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. The last developments related to this project were presented.

The aim of the STAMAS 7FP project is to develop an innovative exo-eskeleton for astronauts to improve exercising activities inside the spacecraft and to assist them Extra Vehicular Activities. The device will formed by different actuators based on smart materials working as artificial muscles.

Cesar Arismendi (UC3M) presented in July, 16, 2015 his PhD Thesis. Its title is Dexterous Robotic Motion Planning using Intelligent Algorithms. The directors of the thesis were Luis Moreno and Santiago Garrido. The examing board was formed by Carlos Sagues, Pedro Lima and Carlos Balaguer. He obtained the Cum Laude degree.

ROBOTICS-UPM researchers use aereal robots for measuring temperature, humidity, lighting and the concentration of CO2 in a greenhouse in Almeria. Drones are used to build maps of environmental variables and ensure the right conditions for plant growth.

Arnaud Ramey (UC3M) presented in July, 7th, 2015 his PhD Thesis. Its title is Local user mapping via multi-modal fusion for social robots. The directors of the thesis were Miguel Ángel Salichs and María Malfaz. The examing board was formed by Fernando Torres, Dolores Blanco and Jorge Dias. He obtained the Cum Laude degree.
